An equation-discovery approach to earthquake-ground-motion prediction

چکیده
In active seismic regions an earthquake’s peak ground acceleration (PGA) is required information when designing a building. In this study we employ the state-of-the-art, Lagramge, equation-discovery system to induce an equation that is suitable for modeling the PGA and investigate its applicability. In contrast to traditional modeling techniques the Lagramge system does not presume the structure of the equation and then identify the parameter values; instead, it finds the equation’s structure as well. From the large amount of background knowledge on earthquake engineering we formalize a context-free grammar, which is then used as a guideline for the equation-building procedure. The PF-L data set used for the experiments is taken from the study of Peruš and Fajfar (2010), which is based on the data sets of Chiou et al. (2008) in the project Next Generation Attenuation of Ground Motion and the study of Akkar and Bommer (2010). The best model derived from the grammar is then quantitatively and qualitatively evaluated and compared. The presented results support the proposal to use an equation-discovery tool as an aid to the PGA modeling work and to potentially contribute new knowledge to the field of earthquake engineering.

Ground Motion: Complexity and Scaling in the Near Field of Earthquake Ruptures
Attenuation relation (Ground-motion prediction equation) The term “attenuation relation” is a former short-hand notation in earthquake engineering for “empirical ground-motion attenuation relationship”, now referred to as “ground-motion prediction equation” (GMPE). Attenuation relations represent empirical scaling equations that relate observed ground-motion intensity measures to parameters of ...

The main objective of this study is estimating acceleration time history of 16 September 1978 Tabas earthquake incorporating the seismological/geological source-path and site model parameters by using finite-fault simulation approach. The method generalizes the stochastic ground-motion simulation technique, developed for point sources, to the case of finite faults. It subdivides the fault plane...

Probabilistic seismic hazard analysis is a technique for estimating the annual rate of exceedance of a specified ground motion at a site due to the known and suspected earthquake sources. A Monte-Carlo approach is utilized to estimate the seismic hazard at a site. This method uses numerous resampling of an earthquake catalog to construct synthetic catalogs to evaluate the ground motion hazard a...
متن کاملRapid Estimation of Earthquake Source and Ground-Motion Parameters for Earthquake Early Warning Using Data from a Single Three- Component Broadband or Strong-Motion Sensor
We propose a new algorithm to rapidly determine earthquake source and ground-motion parameters for earthquake early warning (EEW). This algorithm uses the acceleration, velocity, and displacement waveforms of a single three-component broadband (BB) or strong-motion (SM) sensor to perform real-time earthquake/noise discrimination and near/far source classification. When an earthquake is detected...

To evaluate the earth seismic response due to earthquake effects, ground response analyses are used to predict ground surface motions for development of design response spectra, to compute dynamic stresses and strains for evaluation of liquefaction hazards, and to determine the earthquake induced forces that can lead to instability of earth and earth-retaining structures. Most of the analytical...
